Abstract

This paper examines how virtual, augmented, and mixed reality can support the digital preservation of Syria’s endangered heritage and enrich tourism through immersive, educational experiences. In this way, immersive technologies can translate digital reconstructions of conflict-damaged Syrian sites into tourism experiences that support heritage conservation and create additional economic value. By leveraging augmented reality to digitally restore artifacts in situ, these technologies mitigate the physical degradation of vulnerable archeological sites while simultaneously providing visitors with meaningful, enhanced educational narratives.

The analysis also emphasises a strategic framework for using immersive technologies to digitally reconstruct damaged heritage sites and support sustainable economic growth in Syria (The Application of Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR) Technologies in the Syrian Tourism Sector: A Framework for Cultural Heritage Preservation, Visitor Engagement, and Sustainable Tourism Development, n.d.). By leveraging these immersive tools, stakeholders can facilitate the virtual restoration of sites like Palmyra and Aleppo, thereby providing accessible, globally scalable educational engagement while mitigating physical strain on delicate archaeological assets. Furthermore, the deployment of mixed reality in these settings serves to enhance the mission of heritage valorisation, driving novel visitor behaviours that translate into meaningful post-experience engagement. Accordingly, integrating VR, AR, and MR into Syrian tourism can align visitor experiences with the digital preservation of the country’s UNESCO-listed heritage.

However, the successful implementation of these frameworks requires addressing inherent technological challenges, such as device functionality limitations and the complexities of long-term digital maintenance, as well as the critical need for robust infrastructure to support the continuous data requirements of immersive content. Furthermore, fostering local capacity in digital curation and software development is essential to ensure that these XR implementations remain culturally authentic and contextually relevant to the regional heritage narrative. Moreover, bridging these institutional gaps necessitates inter-agency coordination to manage complex heritage data and secure the intellectual property rights integral to long-term sustainability.
